Opportunities for Study

A qualification that prepares you to work with Children & Young People

The Centre for Children and Young People, in conjunction with the School of Education, offers a number of postgraduate qualifications providing a contemporary, professionally relevant and practical interdisciplinary qualification for people working, or intending to work, with children, young people and their families. The awards are specially targeted for professionals working in contexts including:

  • Community services;
  • Child & family health services;
  • Schools and other educational settings;
  • Community based child and youth services;
  • Family Relationship Centres;
  • Government and NGO policy making agencies;
  • Research and consultancy requiring high level knowledge and skills in relation to children and young people.

These courses are informed by up-to-date research and include a strong practical component. They are innovative in terms of their interdisciplinary nature, focus on international best practice and use of case-studies and examples that link theory with the contemporary context of working with children and families.

The Graduate Certificate of Childhood and Youth Studies

The Graduate Certificate of Childhood and Youth Studies will:

  • expose candidates to a breadth of contemporary research, theory, policy and practice in relation to children, childhood and youth;
  • enable candidates to develop an appreciation of children's place in society and how their wellbeing, interests, development and rights can be secured, enhanced or constrained through law, public policies and professional practices;
  • encourage candidates to reflect upon, critique and improve their own professional practice in relation to children and young people; and
  • support candidates to develop a range of transferable skills, knowledge and capabilities to foster child and youth participation and inclusion.

The Master of Childhood & Youth Studies

In addition to the aims associated with the Graduate Certificate of Childhood and Youth Studies , the Master of Childhood & Youth Studies will:

  • provide candidates with an opportunity to extend and deepen their understanding of issues concerning children and young people and services related to them;
  • provide candidates with a grounding in theoretical, methodological and analytical skills needed to critique, design and undertake research related to, or involving, children and young people; and
  • support candidates to conduct their own investigation (research project) related to children and young people within their own professional context.

Course Structures

The award structures have been designed to provide maximum flexibility. Candidates can choose to:

  • complete the 4 unit Graduate Certificate (one year part time) OR
  • the full 12 unit Masters program (3 years part time) OR
  • enrol in single units as accredited professional development, leaving your options open to complete a full award course at a later time.

It is also possible to exit the Masters course following completion of 8 units and be awarded a Graduate Diploma of Child and Youth Studies.

Acceleration is possible, with study over the summer period and graduates with a relevant 4 year undergraduate degree and professionally relevant experience can apply for advanced standing for up to 4 units.

If you are interested in finding out more about these courses please contact Dr Karen Hawkins or our administrative staff to obtain a Prospective Student Guide.

Further information about the courses, including details on how you can apply, can be found on the SCU courses website.
