3D studio

The 3D studio includes an area dedicated to ceramics that incorporates a large light space with a separate glaze room, electric kilns and a plaster mould-making area with wheel throwing facilities. Related equipment includes an onsite wood-fire kiln, a raku kiln, a slab roller, mixers and a sandblaster.

Sculpture facilities include a large industrial space housing individual student workstations.

The 3D studio is supported by a bronze and aluminium casting foundry, a metal and wood workshop and a development area for the construction of large works.

Digital art and design labs

Digital Art and Design is taught both face-to-face in the V Block computer lab (Lismore campus) and through the SCU intranet portal, MySCU. Within the computer labs, all networked Mac computers have internet access and storage facilities for student works. The air-conditioned space has a built-in projector and stereo sound facilities for teaching and presentations.

Scanners, printers and image-capturing facilities (35mm digital still and camcorders) are also available for on-campus students. Lab software includes the latest version of the Adobe Creative Suite and a variety of other image editing and related software.

Painting studios

The painting studios are modern and well equipped with facilities for oil, acrylic, encaustic and mixed media. Painting students in second and third year have individual workstations. These are equipped with appropriate tables, easels, panel and wall space and lockable mobile cupboards with palette surfaces. The three painting rooms have appropriate ventilation systems, excellent lighting and include a utility area with data projection facilities for tutorials.

The studios provide a platform for the development of collegiate interaction between students and staff. They facilitate the provision of feedback for work in progress and give students the opportunity to work individually and collaboratively on set projects and self-initiated directions. The studios function as a learning space for best practice with regard to occupational health and safety.

Photography facilities

Photography students share the V Block computer lab (Lismore campus) with Digital Art and Design and Media Studies students. Students access state-of-the-art Mac hardware and the latest Adobe software for photo editing. There are 35mm Nikon digital SLR cameras available for class use as well as specialist lenses, tripods, and advanced photography studio lighting equipment. The studio includes a fully-operational darkroom for processing and printing black and white film. Distance distance education students provide their own camera equipment.

Printmaking studios

The printmaking studios are large and well ventilated and full of energetic, dynamic people. A strong collegial atmosphere encourages the best work and creates a sense of joint ownership and responsibility for the studio.

The screenprinting studio is used for non-toxic processes including screenprinting, papermaking, and some relief printing and incorporates a digital workstation for inter-media studies. Facilities include:

  • 12 screenprinting work stations
  • high pressure screen washout facilities
  • print drying racks
  • UV light and vacuum table
  • screen drying facilities
  • Hollander beater, paper press and associated felts, tubs, numerous mould & deckles and screens for making max sheet size of 100 cm x 180 cm
  • Powermac G3, scanner, colour printer.

The etching studio is fully and efficiently ventilated and is used for Etching, Lithography and Relief printing. It has a separate aquatint room.

Studio drawing

Drawing is considered the foundation of the visual arts studio practice. The drawing studios provide large light and airy spaces for the development of imagery in groups or individually. They facilitate the provision of direct feedback by both staff and students for works in progress to encourage the cross fertilization of ideas between drawing and other studio areas.
