How to become a teacher
Undergraduate direct entry
Entry into our teaching degrees will be based on an indicative ATAR of 70 or OP of 13 with no additional prerequisite entry requirements. Our education degrees are combined with a Bachelor of Arts to ensure a comprehensive foundation for our education students in relevant discipline areas like mathematics, English and science.
Southern Cross University offers the following range of innovative teaching degrees:
- Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Primary/Early Childhood)
- Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Primary)
- Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Primary/Secondary)
- Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Secondary)
- Bachelor of Technology/Bachelor of Education (Secondary)
Teacher Education Scholarships are available through teach.NSW for students who are Aboriginal, would like to teach in a high-demand subject area, or would like to work in a rural or remote NSW public school.
Undergraduate pathway courses
The Bachelor of Arts provides a pathway into an Education degree, whereby discipline units, which are foundational to Education, can be studied.
We have also created a pathway course for students who may not yet have reached the academic level required to gain entry directly into a University degree. Students who need additional assistance to build their academic skills can apply for out fee-free Preparing for Success Program. After successfully completing this course in the first session, they can apply to enter an education degree of their choice in second session.
Southern Cross University offers two graduate-entry course options enabling graduates from other disciplines to achieve a teaching qualification. Both courses have accreditation with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). Courses accredited by NESA have national accreditation through the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).
Admission into the Master of Teaching is assessed on the basis of an applicant having ideally completed major and minor study areas in which they intend to specialise and that align with the Australian National Curriculum. Applicants who have only completed a major study area may still gain admission to the course, but will qualify to teach in one secondary subject only. As part of their course study, applicants may be able to choose elective units, which may be used towards a recognised minor study area.
The Graduate Diploma in Education (Early Childhood) is designed for those who wish to be four-year trained early childhood teachers, or who want to upgrade from a three-year teaching qualification.
Students who have not completed the prescribed course content in their degree studies may wish to consider the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Primary/Secondary), towards which their undergraduate studies will generally provide significant advanced standing credit.
