Flexible study options

Depending on the course they choose, Southern Cross University students may attend the Lismore, Coffs Harbour or Gold Coast campuses. On-campus classes usually consist of lectures, workshops, and tutorials supplemented by online forums.

Flexible Study

Learning at Southern Cross University may take place in traditional lecture theatres or in virtual classrooms, using state-of-the-art web-based technology. Learning may also involve field trips, workshops, participation in residential workshops, work experience and internships.

Flexible study options may include:

  • Many units have an online component - teaching may be delivered using Collaborate Learn (a virtual classroom application), or via online discussion forums. Both provide opportunities for students to interact with lecturers and other students.
  • A limited number of units are delivered exclusively online and students should check their availability prior to enrolment.
  • All students are encouraged to network with each other through informal study groups. These assist in the exchange of ideas, resources and support.
  • Tele-tutorials and workshops are offered in many postgraduate units. Participation is not compulsory and there are no additional costs.
  • The University provides students with a range of internet options and computing services including internet access using a Southern Cross University email account, access to library catalogues and electronic resources and access to on-campus computing labs.

Online study is often the best option for people who need to juggle work and family commitments or who wish to study a Southern Cross University course but do not want to relocate. If you are looking to expand your skills, re-enter the job market after a long absence, or want a complete career change, online study may be the answer.

Students enrolled online are required to have access to a computer that has internet access and a CD-ROM drive with a current operating system. While you can study units offered online without having to attend classes, many units offered by the School of Environment, Science and Engineering have a compulsory residential workshop that you must attend to satisfy the requirements of that unit. Residential workshops are held either on-campus at Lismore or at specified off-campus locations.

If you prefer this study option, you will be well supported by our specialist online studies staff. The University provides a comprehensive distance education package for each unit which includes:

  • Study Guide - provides a week-by-week guide through the unit topics and outlines all assessment tasks.
  • Collection of Readings - to support the topics, plus a list of other recommended reading resources usually held in the university library. Many of these supplementary readings are available online.
  • Text Book - included in the study package for postgraduate students. Undergraduate students are advised to purchase a copy of the prescribed text for each unit.
  • Student Liaison Team - is dedicated to supporting students throughout their studies.
