ActivityDescription
Earthquake (Helter Skelter Shelter) - STUDENT NOTES Students construct a tall earthquake-proof tower using only basic materials, sound engineering principles, and ingenuity. At the end of the session the towers are put to the test on an earthquake simulator.
Minipult Student Guide Notes Discovery Day Students are required to construct a mini-catapult from Dagwood Dog sticks, elastic bands and tape to launch a foam golf ball at a target from varying distances! Points are awarded for distance and accuracy.
Electropolis (ElectraCITY) - STUDENT NOTES The aim of this half-day activity is to supply power to the infrastructure of Electroplis, using the most cost effective electricity produced by the power stations.
Get a Grip (Grasping at Straws) Discovery Day The aim of this half-day activity is to design and build artificial fingers and thumb for the bionic hand so that a number of tasks can be completed. These tasks include various movement tasks, and picking up objects of different sizes and weights.
String Along Student Notes Discovery Day The aim of this half-day activity is to connect the towns and cities (bolts) in the most efficient network possible. The shorter the string used, the more points your team earns.
Get Over It Student Notes Discovery Day Build a small bridge from balsa, tape, paddle pop sticks, etc. Points are awarded for load-carrying capacity (tested with dynamic loads).
Light Comms Discovery Day Student Notes Students design a code to send messages along fibre optic rods using pulses of coloured light.
Water wheel Discovery Day Student Notes Students design and test a turbine.
