ActivityDescription
Bridge Student Notes Students build a small bridge from balsa, pins, tape, paddle pop sticks etc. Points are awarded for strength and load-carrying capacity (tested with dynamic loads).
Catapult Student notes Students build a catapult that can fire a tennis ball accurately over a long distance. At the end of the session, teams will be given a projectile and their catapults will be tested for distance and accuracy on the firing range.
ElectraCITY Student notes Students must make a profit by providing electricity to as much of the city's infrastructire as possible at the lowest possible cost. Your team will have an ElectraCITY board, a batter and a few cables to start with.
Grasping for Straws Activity Guide Students are required to design, build and use a 'bionic hand' built fromPVC pipe, string, straws, and timber coffee stirrers. Each group willthen assess the effectiveness of their construction in several tests.
Helter Skelter Shelter Student notes Students construct a tall earthquake-proof tower using only basic materials, sound engineering principles, and ingenuity. At the end of the session the towers are put to the test on an earthquake simulator.
Misson to Mars Student notes Students construct a vehicle from materials provided to transverse an undulating surface. Students will use rubber bands to provide the tension for the suspension system. Note: This is a wet weather activity.
Confounding communications The aim of this activity is to design an efficient code to send messages along fibre optic rods using pulses of coloured light.
Flat pack The aim of this full-day activity is to make a profit by building a table and two chairs for a well-known design company.
