SCU Robotics Club

The SCU Robotics Club is open to all ages across the university and wider community. Our aim is to share our enthusiasm and knowledge in building and programming robots from beginner to skilled in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Due to COVID-19 our events are currently only offered online.

Robotics course – Exploring Robotic Vision

This FREE 10 week on-line course is designed for interested primary or high school students with little or no coding skills or robotic knowledge.

The course is hands-on and based on the Pi2Go2 with Raspberry Pi Camera Board with pan/tilt mechanism attachments. The courses explores the functions of the Open CV:

Camera initialisation and Open CV installation
Image and video capture from the Pi Camera
Image manipulation
Object following, using pan/tilt
Ball tracking
Object identification
Detecting faces
Following a person with the Pi2Go2
Individual facial recognition

When: 15 July 6:00pm - 7:00pm

Weekly Robotics Club

Our weekly robotics club promotes interest and self-learning in robotics through two options.

Lego EV3
Through the EV3 Brick students move into the concept of the robot’s inputs and output. This basic coding controls the robot and then works to vary the robot’s behaviour depending on the surroundings. Once this has been mastered the robot can be coded to participate in a sumo competition.

Pi
Students are introduced to Pi hardware then to the Python language. Physical computing is introduced using LEDs with control code written in Python.

The course includes controlling motors, controlling analogue and digital sensors.

Introduction to Lego Robotics in the classroom

This two-day course is designed to give teachers the confidence to use EV3 robotics in everyday teaching.

It uses a problem-solving approach through the RoboCup Junior Secondary Search and Rescue Challenge to demonstrate the differentiation and engagement possibilities of robotics.

This program contributes to 10 hours of NESA Registered PD addressing 1.2.2, 3.3.2 and 5.1.2 from the Australian Professional Standards towards Teachers for Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

RoboCup Junior Workshop Challenge

RoboCup Junior is a project-orientated education initiative designed for primary and secondary school children. The competition incorporates mechanical engineering and IT skills across the school curriculum and encourages sharing, teamwork and organisational skills.

Search and Rescue Maze requires robots to navigate a maze, avoiding certain tiles using EV3 distance sensor and the colour sensor.

The Dance Challenge requires robots to move in a choreographed routine with music chosen by the students.

RoboSumo involves two robots in a ring and the last one left in the ring wins.
