Bachelor of Midwifery
"Being a midwife is the most amazing experience. You play an integral role in welcoming new life into the world by supporting women and families during such a profound life event. It's a very special feeling.
"Studying midwifery at SCU's Gold Coast campus provided me not only with the clinical knowledge I need to be a great midwife, but also a holistic approach and woman-centred approach to childbearing. The teachers are passionate about what they do and in turn produce passionate graduates.
"As a mother myself, I strongly believe that a woman's birth experience and how she is supported can impact her for the rest of her life. I love being able to provide women with the information and support so they are empowered to make choices about pregnancy and birth.
"After graduating I got a job at Cairns Base Hospital and I'm constantly inspired by the diversity of the job - no two days are ever the same. I've been lucky to have rotated through many different areas, including the birth suite, maternity ward and antenatal clinic.
"I've also had the opportunity to work as part of the extended midwifery service, which provides home visits for women in the postnatal period. I am passionate about breastfeeding and it's such a great feeling when you can help a new mother who is having issues successfully breastfeed her baby.
"Midwifery at SCU is hands-on and enabled me to complete clinical placement in many different models of care ranging from hospitals to birth centres to publicly-funded home birth programs.
"The facilities are state-of-the-art and the focus on group work and clinical supervision creates strong bonds within the student cohorts. I've formed lifelong friendships.
"When you're a midwife you see miracles every day. If you want an inspiring study experience I can't recommend SCU enough."
