Marcelle Burns is the 2017 School of Law and Justice Alumnus of the Year. Marcelle Burns is a Kamilaroi woman who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Laws in 2000. She is a pre-doctoral Fellow in the School of Law at the University of New England. She is a legal practitioner, academic and a leader in the field of Indigenous peoples and the law. Marcelle is a leading voice in the national dialogue on Indigenous cultural competency.
Marcelle is currently working on an internationally significant project recognised by the Council of Australian Law Deans and the New South Wales Department of Justice. She will be delivering an invited address to the Association of Continuing Legal Education conference in Vancouver about initiatives in Australia that incorporate Indigenous cultural competency in legal education. She works tirelessly to advance social justice issues and remains committed to promoting greater recognition of Aboriginal peoples’ rights.
