Graduate story: Scout Symons
"My career path so far has involved both sides of my degree. While studying at SCU, I worked for AIME (Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience) as a program manager assistant at the Uni's Lismore campus. The AIME program gives Indigenous teenagers the skills, opportunities, and self-confidence to help them finish high school and go on to further study. Studying social sciences gave me insights into understanding the challenges different groups in our society face.
"Currently I am using the law side of my degree working in compliance at Summerland Credit Union. I am responsible for all of the credit union's deceased estates, garnishee orders and powers of attorney involving our customers. I've also been involved in special projects such as writing policy and procedure.
"I thought that studying law and social science at SCU was the perfect combination for me to gain the knowledge and skills to better assist my community.
"I've always been really socially conscious and interested in social justice. At school I volunteered at the Five Loaves mobile soup kitchen every Friday night throughout Years 11 and 12 and was always involved with the Vinnies' committee. I kept up that involvement while I was a uni student, volunteering for Five Loaves when it was at SCU each week giving food to students struggling on low incomes.
"I'm still volunteering, these days at the Rotary Club of Casino, the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Committee, Windara Fundraising Committee, Casino Showgirl and various other fundraisers.
"I was lucky enough to be selected as a crew member on the Young Endeavour on the Denmark to Amsterdam leg of its World Voyage 2015. We were in Germany for Sail Bremerhaven and The Netherlands for Sail Amsterdam, two of the biggest Festivals of Sail in northern Europe. I'm an all-rounder, I like to give anything a try. The voyage was a huge challenge, mentally and physically. Being on a ship with 25 strangers was unlike anything I'd done before. Professionally, the adventure developed my leadership skills.
"I'm continuing my studies this year with a Master of Legal Practice, focussing on humanitarian law and human rights.
"Long term, I plan to become a great lawyer and continue to be active in advocating for social justice. I also plan to take every opportunity I am given, which is what life is all about!"
