Elected Student Representatives for Academic Board

Southern Cross University’s Academic Board includes two student elected members, one coursework and one higher degree research. Elections for the student member positions are held annually. The students serve a one year term normally commencing March at the first Academic Board meeting of the year.

The student member role offers interesting insights into the ‘behind the scenes’ operations of the University. Students gain experience in governance and decision making and have an opportunity to influence the decisions made by the University in relation to academic matters.

Academic Board is the principal academic body of the University responsible for establishing and maintaining the highest standards in teaching and learning and research in the University. It approves new courses and develops and amends rules and policies such as those relating to assessment, student admissions, advanced standing and postgraduate supervision.

Academic Board receives a regular report from the Vice Chancellor who outlines priorities for the University and current issues in the higher education sector. The Board also receives reports from the sub-committees such as, Accreditation Committee (which is involved in approving changes to our teaching programs, as well as recommending new programs), Academic Standards and Quality Committee (which monitors the quality of our programs), the Research Committee (which focuses on the University’s research strategy and standards), and the Higher Degrees Research Committee (which looks at postgraduate research degrees).

Academic Board considers a wide range of issues and initiatives that impact on the student experience and its student members are well positioned to draw on their own student experience and bring the perspectives of student colleagues to inform the University’s decision making.
