Teacher Commendations

Teacher Commendations

Southern Cross University has some outstanding teachers, and the Teacher Commendations provides a way for students and staff to tell us about their teachers and colleagues they believe are cut out for an HD.

Teacher Commendations can refer to any learning experience or collegial activity at SCU within the last two years. The term “Teacher” can therefore include individuals and groups of: Unit Assessors, tutors, project supervisors, Honours supervisors, Research Higher Degree (Masters, PhD) supervisors, placement supervisors, or students in roles such as Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS) leader.

The Teacher Commendations process takes place annually in late August/early September, however Commendations can refer to any learning experience or collegial activity at SCU within the last two years.

In 2017 over 300 Teacher Commendations were received. The summary report includes a quantitative summary, selected quotes and a Wordle.

2017 Teacher Commendations Summary Report

The Teacher Commendations are voluntary and open to all staff and students. There is no limit to the number of commendations any person can make, however each commendation requires a statement of between 50 and 200 words.

The Teacher Commendations were started as an initiative of the Centre for Teaching and Learning in 2015.

Lodgement

Commendations are lodged through an online form that requests:

  • Name, email, Student/Staff ID of the person making the commendation
  • Choice of whether to be anonymous or named to the teacher
  • Context: Teacher role along with (optionally) Unit Code, Unit Name, Session, and Year
  • A statement of 50-200 words outlining why you are nominating the individual. Please include specific examples and outcomes.

What happens with your commendation?

After the portal is closed, data processing takes about three weeks.
The Teacher Commendations are collated into a report for each individual or team commended. Individual entries are listed as either anonymous or identified as per your request. Reports are then emailed to each staff member or the nominated team contact person. Staff commended may use information in the report to support an application for an SCU Vice Chancellor's Citation.

Heads of School and School Directors of Teaching and Learning receive a copy of all the reports generated for staff in the School.
