Hybrid Learning: Preparing Global Learners for the SC Model

Presenters: Ros WalpoleAlana BryantBrian Fabian and Sharon Leslie

SCU College’s foundational units, ENGL1006: Business Communication and ENGL1007: International Communication, are pioneering hybrid education by blending online teaching with in-person learning at offshore partner universities. Piloted in 2023 at Dalian University in China, and now running at Changchun Normal University, these units prepare international undergraduate students to engage with the Southern Cross Model. They focus on building digital and academic literacies, cultural competence, and language skills through both implicit and explicit teaching methods, addressing the challenges faced by non-native English speakers. Delivered in hybrid modes with synchronous online and face-to-face classes, the units engage students at their home universities, supported by on-site staff.

This presentation will reflect on the evolving design, development, and delivery of these units over the past 18 months, highlighting the impact on students, staff, and stakeholders, and exploring the challenges and successes of this innovative approach.

Audience: All staff.

Please note: Register for this workshop in Scout and the workshop Zoom details will be provided in the Scout confirmation email.

Moderator: Centre for Teaching and Learning team member.
