Providing Insightful Peer Reviews: Strategies for Effective and Collegial Feedback
Presenter: Polly Lai, Centre for Teaching and Learning
This practical workshop is designed to equip academic staff with the skills and confidence to conduct peer reviews of teaching that are constructive, collegial, and aligned with SCU values. Whether you are planning for promotion, or HEA fellowship purposes, this session will help you develop strategies for providing meaningful and actionable feedback that supports your colleagues’ teaching enhancement. Participants will explore the SCM peer review criteria, learn how to structure their feedback, and consider how to approach peer review as a collaborative and developmental conversation. Ideal for educators who are nominated by their faculties to be a reviewer.
What this workshop will include:
- An overview of the purpose and principles of peer review of teaching at SCM
- A review of the SCM peer review process, reviewer responsibilities, and key milestones
- Exploration of the SCM peer review criteria and how to interpret and apply them
- Strategies for providing clear, constructive, actionable and collegial feedback
- Tips for balancing critique with support in a professional and respectful tone
- Alignment of review practices with the Professional Standards Framework (PSF) 2023
- Opportunities for discussion, reflection, and clarification of reviewer roles in different contexts (e.g. professional development, promotion, HEA applications)
