Course summary
The Bachelor of Accounting has been developed to provide graduates with the ability to identify, critically analyse and exercise professional judgement for challenges that face all organisations in today’s highly dynamic business environment using social, sustainable, ethical, economic, regulatory and global perspectives.
This degree is designed to produce work-ready graduates for a wide range of career opportunities, including being an accountant. It gives graduates the opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge to meet the rapidly changing nature of professional roles in accounting and in the banking and finance sector.
Accountants are critical to every type of organisation – public, private, government, business and not-for-profit. As finance professionals, accountants are relied on to solve business problems and communicate relevant information in diverse environments.

Major areas of study
The course includes core units in taxation, financial services, law, marketing and communication with elective units in advanced taxation, human resources, competitive strategy, business environment and law.

Assessment methods
Assessment may be in the form of essays, reports, audio or video presentations, online quizzes, case analyses, and examinations.
Teaching methods
On-campus students experience a variety of teaching approaches including lectures, tutorials, online activities and video-linked or podcast virtual classes. The method of teaching may vary from unit to unit.
Our online study option is highly interactive and strives to promote collaboration and a sense of community. Students may receive a combination of podcast or video-linked lectures, electronic study materials, workshops, online discussion forums and virtual classes. The method of teaching may vary from unit to unit.
Career opportunities
Graduates will have the skills and knowledge for employment in areas such as tax, business consulting, business planning, business valuations, employee relations, estate and trust planning, forensic accounting and sustainability strategy development.
The Bachelor of Accounting is a pathway to many financial services positions in commercial banking, corporate finance, funds management and stockbroking, financial risk management, foreign exchange and investment banking. If your chosen career path is to become a licenced Financial Planner or Financial Adviser, you need to be aware that recent legislative changes in the finance industry now require new entrants to hold an Approved Degree. Southern Cross University is liaising with FASEA to develop and restructure its finance degrees to meet the new educational requirements.

Subject to the choice of specific units, this degree fulfils the educational requirements for:
- Registration as a BAS Agent and a Tax Agent by the Tax Practitioners Board.
- Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) RG146 accreditation.
With the new FASEA legislative requirements, the provision of ASIC RG146 accreditation will only remain in place up until December 2023. Note: ASIC RG146 accreditation is not a substitute/equivalent for FASEA accreditation.
If your chosen career path is to become a licenced Financial Planner or Financial Adviser, you need to be aware that recent FASEA legislative changes in the finance industry now require new entrants to hold an Approved Degree. Learning Resources
MySCU is a student's point of entry to a range of online services and resources that support study and student life. The portal includes unit learning sites and information sites where students can access resources, communication tools and useful links that are integral to their studies.
The web-based study environment Blackboard Learn delivers an advanced online learning environment for students and lecturers to communicate and collaborate through virtual meeting spaces, classrooms, and discussion boards. They can share files, presentations and applications. If a tutorial or lecture is recorded, students can view it afterwards.
Learning materials include the provision of unit information guides, study guides and readings. Students may need to purchase or access prescribed text books.
The SCU Library provides a wide range of services that include face-to-face and online help, and access to print and electronic resources.
The Academic Skills team supports student learning by offering online and on-campus academic skills workshops, assignment reviews and small group or one-on-one face-to-face, phone or Skype consultations during business hours 9am to 4.30pm. Appointments can be made via the MySCU Hub 'Connect Now' button or on the Academic Skills home page. Students can also book appointments online in Career Hub.
The Studiosity service provides online after-hours study support for SCU students. This service is available from 4pm to midnight Sunday to Friday via the 'Connect Now' button on MySCU Hub or from a link in nominated unit learning sites. The Studiosity service offers generic writing feedback and live online chat assistance for foundational concepts and study skills.
Equipment and facilities
Southern Cross University provides students with modern well equipped teaching spaces such as lecture theatres, classrooms, and studios or laboratories tailored to meet the needs of specific study disciplines. Contemporary audiovisual equipment is standard in most teaching venues, and students have access to computer labs for individual study purposes.Course structure

Exit Award
Students can exit with the Diploma of Accounting if 96 credit points have been successfully completed comprising any 8 units from the Bachelor of Accounting.
Advanced standing
Generally, students seeking advanced standing will be assessed on a case-by-case basis due to strict accreditation requirements for this degree.
