Course Summary

This course will prepare you with a solid grounding in scientific knowledge and skills, and a taste of the many opportunities that science provides, from the marvels of mathematics, the wonders of the natural environment and more. This course provides students with a pathway to undergraduate programs in environmental sciences and regenerative agriculture.

Units of study

MAT10001 – Foundation Mathematics

Introduces students to and develops mathematical knowledge, concepts and skills required in a range of quantitatively based awards. To reinforce learning real world applications of mathematics will be utilised to develop students’ problem solving skills. Software associated with mathematical calculations, graphing and problem solving will be used.

EDU10010 - Language and Learning in your Discipline

Introduces students to learning skills for university study, communication skills, and reading and writing conventions within university discipline focused study. Students will develop understanding of, and skills in, digital literacies within SCU environment, a variety of academic writing genres relevant to their discipline of study, and principles and application of academic integrity.

CHE00201 – Chemistry

Provides an introduction to basic chemical concepts in inorganic and organic chemistry. It includes atomic and molecular theory, bonding, the periodic table, and chemical reactions important in understanding the nature of geological materials, chemical processes in biological systems, water chemistry, and pollution. Laboratory classes complement lecture content, and provide experience in basic practical techniques.

MAT00211 - Environmental Information Analysis

Introduces statistical methods required for environmental science/management; the different types of variables, exploring data with descriptive statistics, graphically presenting data, performing tests of significance (chi-square, t-test, correlation, regression and analysis of variance) and presenting the results of statistical analyses. Emphasis is placed on matching suitable data with an appropriate statistical method in an environmental management setting and developing a "tool kit" of skills and resources to help students become independent in data management and analysis.

ENS00203 - Earth Systems II: The Hydrosphere

This unit examines the movement of water through the global hydrological cycle. Topics include consideration of the atmospheric component of the global water cycle, investigating weather and climate, and the movement of water on and under the Earth's surface in hydrology. Techniques for the measurement and analysis of surface and sub-surface water and the effect this water has on stream and catchment development is investigated.

BIO00202 – Ecology

Examines the principles and concepts of plant and animal interactions with the abiotic and biotic environment. Consideration is given to the individual, population, community and ecosystem levels of organisation. Aspects of human ecology and human impact on the environment are introduced. Field and laboratory studies will include quantitative analysis and qualitative observations of natural systems and processes, experimental design and critical comparisons of different quantitative sampling and measurement techniques.

Admission Criteria

ATAR 40; OR Certificate III or above; OR one year of paid work experience or equivalent.

Advanced standing

Successful completion of this course will guarantee entry and four units of credit towards the Diploma of Science (Environmental Science stream). Upon successful completion of the additional four units in the Diploma, students will have guaranteed entry and up to one year of advanced standing toward a Bachelor of Environmental Science.
