Unit description

Investigating the technical foundations of Printmaking, this unit considers the role of printing as an historically rich artistic form in relation to other art forms and as a contemporary medium of art practice. The unit provides students with an in-depth introduction to hands-on skill development in a variety of printing processes with an emphasis on types of printing, paper supports, grounds, inks, colour, mediums, and a consideration of their works in the context of contemporary visual art.

Unit content

  • Relief, Intaglio, and Screen Printing will be investigated
  • Understand print editions and artist proofs and monoprints
  • Support structures for printing
  • Technical competence with different techniques

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1demonstrate an open, independent and inquiring attitude towards contemporary cultural developments and new ideas
2design and produce artworks using basic printmaking techniques as a special means of creative and critical expression.
3demonstrate an understanding of the differing methodologies to printing mediums, support, representations
4articulate the theoretical, conceptual, and historical rationale of their work.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. demonstrate an open, independent and inquiring attitude towards contemporary cultural developments and new ideas
  2. design and produce artworks using basic printmaking techniques as a special means of creative and critical expression.
