Unit description

Equips art and design students with some of the key competencies necessary to make the successful transition from art school to professional artistic practice. The unit comprises primarily of talks by a wide spectrum of art industry professionals on issues including: the art market; the gallery circuit; artist-run spaces; entrepreneurship opportunities and public commissions.

Unit content

Management of a project, both financial and legal, as it relates to fine artists.
Graduate Exhibition and other exhibitions.
Developing general business skills and knowledge to thrive as a contemporary artist.
Proposal writing in order to exhibit the skills necessary to conceive, plan and carry out an exhibiting practice.
Importance of peer groups, networking and social media.
How to continue to research and develop your practice away from the support of an art school.
Identify issues that relate to a Fine Art professional practice in the art industry, both from a local and global perspective.
Develop a language and models with which to approach your emerging arts practice professionally and as an arts business.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

identify issues that relate to a professional practice in art and design industries, locally and globally

develop a language and models with which to approach your emerging arts practice professionally and as an arts business

demonstrate an understanding of exhibition practices and implementation

demonstrate an understanding of the forms of professional practice in arts industries, how to write a professional CV and grant applications, and how to communicate professionally with organisations.
