Unit description

Setting the ‘practice-led’ model of research at the core of activities, this unit brings students into a contemporary and active mode of making and researching. This way of working is vital for the success and sustainability of students moving toward the professional world of art and design. Articulating research methods for individual and collaborative practice is mentored by lecturers, with specific examples and approaches from leading practitioners. The theme for this unit is ‘Research Methods’.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

produce artworks which display conviction, confidence and control in ideas and materials, and the ability to isolate areas of process that require further research and sustain further development

demonstrate specific material problem solving within the context of an individual work program and understand how to apply existing materials and technologies in new contexts.

construct a program of artwork with a coherent direction that imaginatively addresses their own interests

create self-directed research that leads to practical outcomes.
