Unit description

Introduces three areas concerned with the study of the person in a societal context: social psychology (especially the role of attitudes and their relationship with behaviour); the central features and development of personality; and the study of psychological disorders and their causes (abnormal psychology).

Unit content

This unit is based upon a total of 150 hours of student learning inclusive of reading, completion of Study Guide exercises, independent student learning, essay preparation, and preparation for the final exam. This unit has been organised into eight topics that correspond to the following chapters in your textbook: Chapters 16, 14, 15, 12, and 10. The material requires critical thinking and consideration of cultural perspectives in applied areas. The Study Guide provides a means of organising your study in such a way as to ensure that these goals are met.

Topic 1. Person perception, attitudes and attributional process
Topic 2. Conformity, obedience and behaviour in groups
Topic 3. Psychological disorders: Myths, realities and controversies
Topic 4. Treatments for psychological disorders
Topic 5. The nature of personality and psychodynamic trait and humanistic approaches to personality
Topic 6. Behavioural and biological perspectives on personality
Topic 7. Motivational theories, concepts and achievement
Topic 8. The elements of emotional experience and assessing emotions.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
