Unit description

Enables students to undertake analysis of a business, industry or social problem or opportunity at a substantially independent level in this (Part A) capstone research unit. Through learning, developing and applying an evidence-based research design, students create an industry-accessible publication that reports on the research process and elaborates on the business solutions and/or research implications.

Unit content

Part A of the Industry Research Project Unit enables students to design a research project. The project is executed and completed in Part B of Industry Research Project. The topics covered in Part A include:

  • What is industry research? 
  • Identifying problems for research
  • Reviewing literature to inform research approach
  • Designing a research project
  • Developing Quantitative Research Tools
  • Developing Qualitative Research Tools

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1Identify and justify business/industry related problems or issues worthy of investigation
2Create and present an ethical and achievable research design based on justifiable and evidence-based methods
3Critically review and synthesise literature with regard to relevant research problems and opportunities
4Develop, pilot and apply critical research tools that have the potential to solicit required data to analyse a given problem.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. Identify and justify business/industry related problems or issues worthy of investigation
  2. Create and present an ethical and achievable research design based on justifiable and evidence-based methods
  3. Critically review and synthesise literature with regard to relevant research problems and opportunities
  4. Develop, pilot and apply critical research tools that have the potential to solicit required data to analyse a given problem.
