Unit description

Introduces the fundamentals of concrete technology and its use in civil construction. Students learn the basic chemical and physical properties of concrete, how to modify these properties to suit different uses, and practical aspects of how concrete structures are constructed.

General concepts of concrete technology
Mix design, strength and durability of concrete
General concepts of concrete reinforcing
Use and application of formwork for concrete construction
Calculation of concrete volumes
Concrete batching, transport and quality control

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
