2024 unit offering information will be available in November 2023

Unit description

Teaches students the principles and processes involved in the removal of contaminants from water. The unit covers physical, chemical, and biological treatment principles, and the application of these principles to the design of functioning water treatment plants.

Unit content

  1. Fundamentals of water and wastewater engineering
  2. Treatment systems
  3. Biological nutrient removal
  4. Biosolids and anaerobic digestion
  5. Water and wastewater in remote and developing communities
  6. Liquid wastes

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1gain a comprehensive understanding of the engineering fundamentals associated with the treatment of contaminated water
2demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the options to treat water and wastewater based on engineering concepts
3apply engineering principles to the design of water and waste water treatment plants to achieve relevant industry standards for water treatment
4apply engineering solutions to the treatment of onsite waste water.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. gain a comprehensive understanding of the engineering fundamentals associated with the treatment of contaminated water
  2. demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the options to treat water and wastewater based on engineering concepts
  3. apply engineering principles to the design of water and waste water treatment plants to achieve relevant industry standards for water treatment
