Unit description
Extends students’ knowledge of structural analysis, materials and construction to the design of complete structures to a specified brief. Introduces students to the design of steel structures. Enables students to calculate loads and design specific structural elements to develop solutions that satisfy strength and serviceability limit states in accordance with the Australian Standard AS4100. Develops students' ability to produce engineering sketches suitable to convey engineering solutions to drafting personnel.
Unit content
Introduction to steel structures
Limit States Design
Calculation of wind loads
Design of steel members under tension, compression, bending, shear and combined actions
Design of connections
Design of portal frame
Learning outcomes
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
On completion of this unit, students should be able to: | GA1 | GA2 | GA3 | GA4 | GA5 | GA6 | GA7 | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | demonstrate an ability to undertake the process of identifying and formulating design problems | Intellectual rigour | Creativity | Knowledge of a discipline | ||||
2 | design structural elements and entire structures to meet stipulated function and performance objectives | Knowledge of a discipline | ||||||
3 | use relevant Australian Standards and codes of practice to analyse and design structures | Knowledge of a discipline | ||||||
4 | demonstrate an understanding of the behaviour of steel as a structural material | Knowledge of a discipline | ||||||
5 | design connections and structural steel members in tension, compression, bending and combined actions | Knowledge of a discipline | ||||||
6 | demonstrate an ability to reduce a complex design project to a set of discrete tasks which are tractable and yet lead to a practical and appropriate overall solution | Intellectual rigour | Creativity | Knowledge of a discipline | ||||
7 | produce effective and accurate sketches suitable to communicate design ideas to drafting personnel. | Creativity | Knowledge of a discipline |
