Unit aim

Develops knowledge and skills in the psychosocial aspects of practice including theories of client self management. Students will also understand their scope of practice and the role of the Australian Diabetes Educators Association [ADEA]. Students further develop their expertise in working with a variety of clients and families from various cultures and backgrounds, including paediatrics, elderly and indigenous people. In addition, students complete 40 hours of clinical practicum within an approved diabetes service to consolidate their learning as clinicians.

Topic 2: The credentialing process and mentoring
Topic 3: Legal and ethical issues of insulin adjustment
Topic 4: Scope of practice
Topic 5: Self management, counselling and motivational interviewing
Topic 6: Cultural issues and managing clients from various backgrounds
Topic 7: Advocacy and working with families and carers
Topic 8: Working with clients with mental health issues
Topic 9: Working in a diabetes service clinical placement
Topic 10: Working with the Indigenous, paediatrics, adolescents and the elderly
Topic 11: Working in specialist’s clinics within the clinical setting, including group and individual education and teaching
