Unit description
Builds on students' existing English language abilities in reading, writing, speaking and listening to develop advanced language skills appropriate for postgraduate study (i.e at IELTS 6.5/CEFR B2+ and above). Students will engage in a range of learning activities which will develop their academic skills and practices, including digital and information literacies essential for success in postgraduate studies. Students will also learn how to practice academic integrity in their work.
Unit content
Advanced English language skills and practices appropriate for postgraduate study (i.e. IELTS 6.5/CEFR B2+ and above) including:
- Academic writing genres: essays, annotated bibliography, and reports
- A range of grammatical structures and vocabulary common in academic language
- A range of discourse markers and cohesive structures common in academic language
- Academic integrity practices relating to text ownership and authorship (e.g. paraphrase, in-text citation and referencing)
- Digital literacy tools and practices: understanding, as well as appropriately using, and communicating with multimedia technology
Learning outcomes
