Unit description

Provides students with an overall understanding of database concepts and theory. Students will learn the steps required to design and build databases and the key elements required to manage and maintain databases in an enterprise. Furthermore, students will learn the importance of big data and security in database management.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1analyse and model business information requirements using the relational modelling technique.
2apply database design principles, methods and tools to design, build and test the functionality of a database.
3implement the key managerial functions for effective and secure administration of an enterprise’s databases.
4articulate the importance of big data and big data analytics to business managers and other stakeholders.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
