Unit description

Focuses on functional and aesthetic aspects of design and the elements and principles of design applied to a variety of textile materials, methods, techniques and end-uses. The work of contemporary designers is investigated and skills in design communication methods used in the area of textiles will be developed. The principles of dyeing, printing, appliqué and embroidery will be investigated through experimentation. Students will design, manufacture and document a textile item featuring surface decoration.

Unit content

  1. Fundamentals of design in textiles
    • Elements and principles of design
    • Experimentation with and application of the elements and principals across a range of textile applications
    • Functional and aesthetic design in a range of textile environments
    • Factors determining appropriate design
    • The work of contemporary designers in textiles and fashion 
  2. Design in practice
    • Visual design concept development through the use of inspiration and evaluation of ideas.
    • Principles and practice of applying colour to fabrics, yarns and fibres
    • Methods of fabric decoration including innovative printing and dyeing, felting, appliqué, pizza, capturing, machine embroidery, quilting, fabric manipulation, layering and free machine embroidery
    • Practical application in the design, manufacture and documentation of a textile item featuring surface decoration. 
  3. Design communication
    • Perspective drawing
    • Fashion sketching and rendering
    • Production drawing
    • The use of CAD in textile design communication
