Unit description

Focuses on the cultural and historical perspectives of textiles and the influence of these on current fashion trends and contemporary designers. The development of the textile industry across the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries is explored and the past, present and future social, economic and environmental impacts analysed. Current issues affecting the Australian industry will be debated.

Unit content

1.     Cultural perspectives of textiles

i.     the use of textiles as an expressive and functional medium in different cultures

ii.    factors that influence textile design in different cultures

iii.   design features characteristic of textile items from different cultures

iv.   influence of cultural perspectives on current fashion trends and contemporary designers in a range of areas 

2.     Historical perspectives of textiles

i.     historical periods, technological developments and social events which have impacted on the development of textiles

ii.    design features characteristic of textile items throughout history

iii.   inter-relationship between historical design developments and society

iv.   influence of historical perspectives on textile design, construction and use

v.    historical influences on current trends and contemporary designers in a range of areas 

3.     Textiles as an industry

i.     the textile industry through the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries

ii.    the social, economic and environmental impact of the textile industry through the centuries

iii.   the development of the Australian Textile, Clothing and Footwear Industry

iv.   the economic, social and environmental significance of the Australian industry

v.    current issues that impact on the Australian industry
