Unit description
Introduces knowledge and skills to design and produce using timber industry processes. The structure, properties, characteristics, preparation, processing and selection of timber and timber products will be examined. Students will develop skills and knowledge related to joinery, construction and finishing, and industry-specific workplace communication skills, leading to the design, preparation, manufacture and presentation of timber products.
Unit content
- Introduction and overview of design in the Industrial Technology context, with a particular focus on timber.
- Structure, properties and characteristics of timber and timber products.
- Timber recovery and conversion and the production of manufactured boards.
- Timber selection and uses in a range of consumer, commercial and industrial contexts.
- Communication techniques including advanced orthogonal and pictorial representations and industry production drawing specifications appropriate for timber products.
- Industry specific workplace communication including literacy, numeracy and calculations.
- WH&S issues in the timber workshop environment.
- Contemporary, foundational skills and methods for joinery, construction and finishing of timber products.
- Use and maintenance of tools and machinery used in the manufacture of timber products.
- Practical application of design principles through the design, preparation, manufacture and presentation of timber products
Learning outcomes
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
On completion of this unit, students should be able to: | |
---|---|
1 | assess the structure, properties and characteristics of timber and timber products |
2 | describe timber recovery and conversion processes and the production of manufactured boards |
3 | select appropriate timber or timber products for uses in a range of consumer, commercial and industrial contexts |
4 | demonstrate sound industry-specific workplace communication skills including literacy, numeracy and graphics communication approaches such as orthogonal and pictorial representations and industry production drawing specifications |
5 | describe and demonstrate appropriate WH&S and maintenance practices for a timber workshop environment |
6 | demonstrate broad foundational skills and methods for joinery, construction and finishing of timber products |
7 | apply appropriate principles and techniques for the design, preparation, manufacture and presentation of timber products. |
