Introduces students to the profession and field of PDHPE. Emphasis is placed upon developing students' understandings of their course of study, the nature of the field and what being a PDHPE professional means for them. Explores young people's engagements with physical activity and health related practices and consider these in light of curriculum and pedagogical innovations.
The unit is divided into two modules. Module 1 introduces you the field of PDHPE. The second module introduces you to some of the issues you face as a PDHPE professional, from a legal point of view. The modules run concurrently throughout the session and are equally weighted.
Module 1: Welcome to the profession 1. Introduction to the course and profession - from past to present 2. Young people today - social and cultural perspectives on physical activity and health 3. Working in schools - the role of the PDHPE teacher 4. Learning to teach in the physical education context 5. Introduction to the PDHPE curriculum through examination and application of the 7-10 PDHPE syllabus 6. Contemporary pedagogy and practice in the physical education context.
Module 2: The law, PDHPE and you 1. The Australian legal system and its implications for organisations involved in physical education, from the perspective of effectively managing legal risks arising in the physical education context 2. The laws of Natural Justice and how they are applied to physical education 3. Liability in Negligence: Considerations for the physical education environment, particularly for teachers 4. Legal Risk management devices including waivers, warnings, disclaimers, exclusion clauses, consent forms 5. Risk management principles, processes, methodology and tools.
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
