Unit description

Introduces students to Science teaching in secondary education. Students learn about syllabus requirements, the development of a unit of work, the development of detailed lesson plans and the selection of appropriate assessment strategies. There is also an opportunity to reflect critically on contemporary perspectives and issues in the teaching of Science in secondary schools.

3. Knowledge of curriculum requirements for teaching Science Years 7-10

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1demonstrate a working knowledge of the concepts and content of the Stage 4/5 NSW Science syllabus including a knowledge of the history of its development and the wider role of Science education in modern society
2develop a working knowledge of programming and the design of units of work in relation to the NSW Science Years 7-10 syllabus and be able to use these to develop effective teaching and learning strategies based on a range of current pedagogical theories to meet the needs of students from diverse backgrounds and across a range of abilities
3demonstrate and apply knowledge of NSW syllabus, cross-curriculum priorities, general capabilities and Quality Teaching principles in order to meet the diverse needs of learners including Life Skills candidates.
4prepare and present a unit of work in Years 7-10 Science that reflects a well-developed ability to plan coherent lesson plans designed to engage students and address learning outcomes and a well-developed ability to plan, assess and report for effective learning by identifying and critically examining assessment and reporting procedures and strategies and devising assessment for learning activities
5critically engage with a range of issues in teaching Science and assess the appropriateness of resources, including ICT, that link to informed and effective teaching and learning across the Science Years 7-10 syllabus
6apply suitable WH&S management, behaviour management, control and safety techniques, especially in relation to the laboratory and fieldwork
7demonstrate well-developed written and oral communication skills as appropriate to the needs and expectations of the profession.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
