Unit description

Investigates pedagogical theory related to the teaching of dance and gymnastics to Stage 4 and Stage 5 school students. Students will examine cooperative learning, assessment approaches, and the principles of peer and self-assessment.  Students will apply these pedagogical concepts to their personal and practicum-based experiences in dance and gymnastics.

Module 1: Pedagogical practice and application for dance

Module 3: Elements of dance 2

Module 4: Pedagogical practice, application and safety

Module 5: Contemporary gymnastic movement 1

Module 6: Contemporary gymnastic movement 2 and evaluating movement

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1safely and competently conduct basic educational dance and educational gymnastics experiences for Stage 4 and Stage 5 school students
2describe and apply the principles of co-operative learning, peer-assessment and self- assessment within the contexts of this unit's dance and gymnastics learning experiences
3discuss the strengths and weaknesses of co-operative learning, peer-assessment and self- assessment for learning and assessment with Stage 4 and 5 students. Discuss the relevance and value of gymnastics and dance education for young people
4locate co-operative learning, peer-assessment and self-assessment within the spectrum of teaching styles available to physical education teachers

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
