Unit description

Develops students' understanding of the link between theory, research, and pedagogy for English across the modes of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in the early childhood and primary classroom. Students will develop the practical skills necessary for the role of teacher as assessor, planner, and facilitator of the development of English curriculum and pedagogy. Students will learn to design teaching, learning and assessment strategies that maximise student engagement and inclusivity and employ ICTs for teaching English.

Module 2: English Curriculum and Pedagogy: Oral Language

Module 3: Curriculum and Pedagogy: Teaching Reading I

Module 4: Curriculum and Pedagogy: Teaching Reading II

Module 5: Curriculum and Pedagogy: Writing

Module 6: Planning and Assessment - Early Childhood and Primary Education

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1review contemporary academic literature about English curriculum and pedagogy for Primary Years: Foundation/Kindergarten – Year 6
2demonstrate knowledge of the structure, content and requirements of the Australian Curriculum F-6 English and NSW K-6 English Syllabus
3plan lessons to teach and assess English across: Speaking and Listening, Reading, and Viewing and Writing and Representing
4prepare a portfolio of resources and teaching activities for English; Speaking and Listening, Reading, and Viewing incorporating the Australian Curriculum General Capabilities (ICT) and Cross Curriculum Priorities

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
