Unit description

Engages students with curriculum, assessment and pedagogy in the key learning area of Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE), with a focus on Primary Years: Foundation/Kindergarten - Year 6 within the continuum of learning. Students critically engage with the role, value, issues and future of HSIE and the content and process of teaching Australian and world history, geography, participatory citizenship, values and ethics. Focuses on developing integrated assessment, teaching and learning strategies in response to the priorities of inquiry-based learning, differentiation, disability and inclusion, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander cultures, digital technologies, literacy and numeracy.

Module 1: History, Geography, Civics in a Post-millennial world

Module 2: A Civil Society

Module 3: Australia’s History

Module 4: Conflict and Peace on Earth

Module 5: What is authentic pedagogy and assessment?

Module 6: Society in the 4th Industrial Revolution

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1demonstrate a sound knowledge of relevant international, national and state HSIE syllabus and relevant early childhood curriculum requirements
2critically examine models of pedagogy, and strategies, for teaching and assessing HSIE from early years to 12 years
3motivate children to engage as active citizens, asking questions and making responsible decisions about issues at the personal, local, national, and global level; as well as engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture
4plan integrated and learning sequences (and supporting ICT resources), which include a variety of teaching and assessment strategies to cater for diverse learning needs and children’s interests

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
