Unit description

Focuses on the complex nature of young people’s health status and wellbeing and the role that schools play in working to promote young people’s health. The unit explores factors that shape the health of young people as well as the various meanings that are attributed to health. The unit investigates current public health and curriculum policy contexts and explores their application to school program development.

Unit content

This unit is divided into two modules. The first module focuses on developing key understandings related to the health and wellbeing of young people. It also explores how and why schools have been called upon to operate as key settings for health promotion, both historically, and in the present. The second module focuses on exploring key frameworks and their application to promoting young people’s health and wellbeing. The second module utilises a case study based approach to develop understandings about young people’s social and emotional wellbeing and how this can be promoted in schools via curriculum teaching and learning, supportive school environments and the establishment of community links.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1discuss key concepts and definitions related to young people's health and wellbeing
2identify and analyse key factors that contribute to the health status of young people
3demonstrate an understanding of sociocultural perspectives of health
4explain the role that schools play in promoting health within contemporary public health policy contexts
5describe key features of the Health Promoting Schools Framework and apply these to the area of social and emotional wellbeing
6demonstrate an understanding of how social and emotional health status impacts upon young people and plan for school-based programs that draw from contemporary health promoting schools and curriculum frameworks to build protective factors.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
