Unit description

Focuses on the complex nature of young people’s health status and wellbeing and the role that schools play in working to promote young people’s health. The unit explores factors that shape the health of young people as well as the various meanings that are attributed to health. The unit investigates current public health and curriculum policy contexts and explores their application to school program development.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1discuss key concepts and definitions related to young people's health and wellbeing and explain the role that schools play in promoting health within contemporary public health policy contexts
2identify and analyse key factors that contribute to the health status of young people and demonstrate an understanding of sociocultural perspectives of health
3describe key features of health promoting schools frameworks and apply these to the area of social and emotional wellbeing
4demonstrate an understanding of how social and emotional health status impacts upon young people and plan for school-based programs that draw from contemporary health promoting schools and curriculum frameworks to build protective factors

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
