Unit description

Introduces students to the study of teaching and learning English as an additional language/dialect and the critical role that culture plays in the learning process. The unit has been designed to inform prospective teachers about the particular needs of non English speaking background children learning English as their second language or dialect in a school context. The unit is primarily aimed at the practical application of language learning theory.

Topic 2 Linguistic, cultural considerations, teaching strategies

Topic 3 Learning a new language

Topic 4 Assessment and the EAL/D student

Topic 5 Oral language development for EAL/D students

Topic 6 Classroom talk: Creating contexts for language learning

Topic 7 From speaking to writing in the content classroom

Topic 8 Reading in a second language

Topic 9 Putting it all together in the classroom

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1demonstrate detailed knowledge of the relationship between language and culture, and the notion of multiculturalism as evident in the primary classroom
2express a clear understanding of the theories of second language learning and strategies associated with teaching EAL/D students
3discuss a range of oral language and written language pedagogical practices for teaching, assessing and evaluating students who are EAL/D
4implement and evaluate EAL/D strategies for enhancing communication, and strategies for teaching vocabulary
5design a unit of work, developed within a cultural context, that focus on listening, speaking, reading, and writing for an identified EAL/D learner.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
