Unit description

Encourages a deep exploration of inter-species relationships and the idea of human as nature.  Students will critically examine the history, theories, and interdisciplinarity of environmental education, including sustainability and its implications for education.  The focus of the unit moves from personal contexts to broader social and ecological contexts to include planning, implementing and evaluating learning experiences in environmental education.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1critically engage with the concept of humans as nature, and how this understanding is reflected in their own environmental and sustainability experiences and philosophies
2demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of current environmental and sustainability issues and their implication for educational praxis
3understand, evaluate, and synthesise environmental education pedagogies based on contemporary research, policy, and curriculum frameworks
4plan, implement and evaluate environmental education learning experiences, applying a diversity of teaching and learning strategies

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
