Unit description

Encourages interdisciplinary approaches to develop understandings of how literature reflects and creates ways of knowing and being in the world. Students explore diverse literature through chronological, disciplinary, cultural and problem-based frameworks. The unit develops critical and creative skills for analysing and synthesising language forms and higher-order literacy demands (i.e. social, aesthetic and cultural).

Module 1. Language and Literature in Context: A Problem-based Approach. 
 
Module 2. Frameworks, Theories and Concepts in Language and Literature.
 
Module 3. Multimodal Explorations of Language and Literature. 
 
Module 4. Interdisciplinary Explorations of Language and Literature.
 
Module 5. Cultural Explorations of Language and Literature. 
 
Module 6. Problem-based Explorations of Language and Literature. 

 

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1describe and analyse the nature and role of language and literature as a means by which we relate to others and shape our understanding of ourselves and our world
2analyse and synthesise application of language and literature structures that relate to higher-order social, aesthetics, and cultural literacy demands across disciplines.
3critically and creatively apply various ways to teach through language and literature choices based on audience, context and purpose
4creatively use and analyse language forms, features and structures of literature in different modes, media and technologies and recognise and relate these to subject-specific literacies

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
