Unit description

Introduces foundation concepts of classroom and behaviour management, with a focus on creating a quality learning environment. Considers aspects of proactive classroom management such as student engagement and motivation through establishing productive relationships, planning relevant curricula and effective pedagogy. Pedagogical approaches to student welfare and discipline will be explored.

  • Overview of significant educational theorists e.g. Dewey, Schön, Freire
  • The significance of school culture and a quality learning environment

Understanding and motivating students

  • Student engagement
  • Teaching as an act of research

Managing student behaviour

  • The impact of effective curriculum and pedagogy on student behaviour
  • The importance of developing productive relationships with students
  • Student welfare and discipline: Principles and practices

Orientation to the Profession School Experience

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit.
