Unit description

Addresses the pedagogical content knowledge required to teach Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students, and to teach all students about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and languages. It explores global and national topics and issues in Indigenous education, through local and regional contexts. There is a focus on applying frameworks based on ethical protocols, principles and practices.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of the impact of culture, cultural identity and linguistic background on the education of students from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds
2demonstrate broad knowledge of, understanding of and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, culture and languages
3set learning goals that provide achievable challenges for students of varying abilities and characteristics
4Identify strategies to support inclusive student participation and engagement in classroom activities
5identify and apply pedagogical content knowledge for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
