Unit description
Provides students with the skills to identify and utilise data to improve educational performance (staff, student or whole school performance). Students evaluate traditional and alternate approaches to assessment, and critically reflect on the recalcitrant issue of the influence of low socio-economic status on student outcomes and the current policy emphases on teacher quality and school improvement. Encourages students to use a wide range of data to improve performance in a systematic way, and to defend claims of improvement with strong evidence.
Unit content
Topic 1: The purposes and methods of data collection and analysis in education.
Topic 2: Utilisation of data to improve teaching and learning.
Topic 3: The data-driven educational environment: NAPLAN, PISA, OECD, My School.
Topic 4: The on-going influence of low socio-economic status (SES) on student outcomes and the problem of disengagement from schooling.
Topic 5: Critical analysis of accountability policies and practices and alternatives to current approaches.
Topic 6: Leading innovation and continuous improvement in schools.
Learning outcomes
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit.
