Unit description

Candidate's may have had to demonstrate service to the University, their profession and/or the broader community as a leader, committee member or other formal role requiring leadership skills and knowledge and application of governance practices that contribute to the effective functioning of the chosen organisation/s, as part of their Higher Degree Research (HDR) program.   Examples of such participation include: i. HDR Candidate member of Academic Board, Faculty Board, Higher Degree Research Committee (HDRC). ii. Office bearing role in Southern Cross Postgraduate Association (SCPA). iii. Member of a conference organising committee. iv. Committee member for a professional society. v. Organising committee of major community event. vi. University Tutor (ANSCO level 1). vii. Completion of formal leadership training program. viii. Sports Development Officer (ANSCO level 2). ix. Conducting and/or being musical director of a choir or theatre group.

Unit content

Candidate's will need to demonstrate knowledge and skills of leadership and governance, and the ability to apply these attributes through participatory service to one or more professional, community or cultural organisations: e.g. the University, their profession, a community, cultural or educational organisation. 
 

 

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1Evaluate and apply ethical principles of organisational leadership and governance to solve complex problems.
2Apply advanced knowledge of the key responsibilities and requirements in a professional, cultural or community organisation through participating as a committee member.
3Apply inquiry based approaches to critical self-reflection for independent learning and personal responsibility for management and leadership outcomes.
4Demonstrated high level oral, written or other communication skills to colleagues, peers and diverse audiences.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
