Unit description

Equips students to critically examine the literature in their agreed area for identification of research opportunities. Students are supported in their development of skills in critical reading, thinking and analysis; perspective and impact; context, purpose and the function of texts. The unit will also enable students to manage the demands of locating, synthesising/analysing and using various texts to develop competence in academic writing, in order to prepare for their thesis-based literature review. This is a continuing unit. Students will extend on their knowledge as they work towards completion of the final grade awarded in On the Shoulders of Giants: Critically Examining the Literature in Education Part 2.

Unit content

• The nature and purpose of a critical literature review;
• Foundational literature search and analysis skills— accessing information sources, literature search strategies, managing the literature review process etc.;
• Write a critical literature review, including synthesising key points and propositions and structuring a critical argument; and
• Examine the structure and organisation of academic texts; opinion, fact, evidence, argument processing text for example, summarising, synthesising, comparing, evaluating; developing cohesion and coherence; drafting, editing and redrafting.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
