Unit description
EAP 1 builds on existing language abilities in reading, writing, speaking and listening. It prepares students for SCU courses which require SCU Language Test level of 5.5-6.0 on entry through developing students' language skills, academic and digital literacy practices. These include: accessing, assessing and disseminating information online; using an LMS; using similarity detection software; self-management; note taking; giving presentations; and, a range of academic writing practices (e.g. paraphrasing, referencing). Upper-intermediate English forms and functions enabling undergraduate level study at SCU (with 6.0 entry) including:
- Pronunciation, academic grammar and vocabulary
- Academic discourse markers and cohesive structures
- Maintaining conversations and giving presentations
- Listening and reading for information
- Varieties of English including written academic English and online informal English
- Academic writing genres (reports, essays, blogs)
Upper-Intermediate English forms and functions enabling Master’s level study at SCU (with 6.5 entry), including:
- Pronunciation, academic grammar and vocabulary
- Academic discourse markers and cohesive structures
- Maintaining conversations and giving presentations
- Listening and reading for information
- Varieties of English including written academic English and online informal English
- Academic writing genres (reports, essays, blogs)
Advanced English forms and functions enabling research level study Masters/PhD levels at SCU (with 7.0 entry), including:
- Pronunciation, academic grammar and vocabulary
- Academic discourse markers and cohesive structures
- Maintaining conversations and giving presentations
- Listening and reading for information, research protocols
- Varieties of English including written academic English and online informal English
- Academic writing genres (reports, essays, blogs)
Learning outcomes
