Unit description

This discipline unit develops students’ understanding about the nature of English language as the basis for human communication. It investigates key knowledge and skills associated with the study of English as a discipline. It presents theories on the acquisition of language, and associated principles and practices. It investigates the importance of home, culture, language and context to the learning of language and literacy.

Unit content

The English Discipline:

  • Broad and critical knowledge and understanding of English as a discipline

Nature and role of Language:

  • Literature
  • Study of a broad range of literature that gives insights into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, multicultural and children’s experiences, for example texts from Australia and other countries, and children’s literature.  
  • Text types and genres of literature.
  • Literacies
  • Study of literacies (definition and concepts)
  • Types of literacies (Multi, critical, visual, techno-literacies) and links to ‘traditional written literacy’
  • Language: Spoken and receptive language (stages of development) and oral language.

Acquisition of Language:

  • Recent theory and practice related to acquisition of language (reading, writing, speaking, listening and visual literacy)
  • Language development including cultural considerations and multi/bilingualism including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages
  • Language acquisition

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
