Introduces students to a range of activities designed to improve English Language communication and fluency.

Pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary

Beyond the sentence and discourse structures

Conversations and presentations

Reading and Listening for information and the main idea

Varieties of English including English on the Internet

Styles of writing

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1Demonstrate an understanding of a range of spoken and written texts
2Use a range of functional vocabulary to communicate ideas in speech and writing
3Use a range of grammatical structures (simple present, past, future aspect) to communicate ideas in speech and writing
4Sustain simple spoken and written communicative exchanges with other speakers of English, share information, request information and signal opinions

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
