Unit description
EAP 1 builds on existing language abilities in reading, writing, speaking and listening. It prepares students for SCU courses which require SCU Language Test level of 5.5–6.0 (CEFR B2) on entry through developing students' language skills, academic and digital literacy practices. These include: accessing, assessing and disseminating information online; using an LMS; using similarity detection software; self-management; note taking; giving presentations; and, a range of academic writing practices (e.g. paraphrasing, referencing). It prepares students for SCU courses which require SCU Language Test level of 6.5 (CEFR B2+) on entry through developing students' language skills, academic and digital literacy practices. These include: accessing, assessing and disseminating information online; using an LMS; using similarity detection software; self-management; note taking; giving presentations; and, a range of academic writing practices (e.g. paraphrasing, referencing). EAP 3 builds on existing language abilities in reading, writing, speaking and listening. It prepares students for SCU courses which require SCU Language Test level of 7.0 (CEFR C1) on entry through developing students' language skills, academic and digital literacy practices. These include: accessing, assessing and disseminating information online; using an LMS; using similarity detection software; self-management; note taking; giving presentations; and, a range of academic writing practices (e.g. paraphrasing, referencing).
Unit content
Upper-intermediate English forms and functions enabling undergraduate level study at SCU (with 6.0/CEFR B2 entry) including:
- Pronunciation, academic grammar and vocabulary
- Academic discourse markers and cohesive structures
- Maintaining conversations and giving presentations
- Listening and reading for information
- Varieties of English including written academic English and online informal English
- Academic writing genres (reports, essays, blogs)
Upper-Intermediate English forms and functions enabling Master’s level study at SCU (with 6.5/CEFR B2+ entry), including:
- Pronunciation, academic grammar and vocabulary
- Academic discourse markers and cohesive structures
- Maintaining conversations and giving presentations
- Listening and reading for information
- Varieties of English including written academic English and online informal English
- Academic writing genres (reports, essays, blogs)
Advanced English forms and functions enabling research level study Masters/PhD levels at SCU (with 7.0/CEFR C1 entry), including:
- Pronunciation, academic grammar and vocabulary
- Academic discourse markers and cohesive structures
- Maintaining conversations and giving presentations
- Listening and reading for information, research protocols
- Varieties of English including written academic English and online informal English
- Academic writing genres (reports, essays, blogs)
Learning outcomes
