Unit description

Introduces the environmental dimension of construction engineering. Students gain an understanding of the environmental systems and processes that can be impacted by construction activities and learn how to mitigate these impacts through engineering solutions and management practices.

Processes that transport pollution
Site waste management and sustainable design
Environmental risk assessment and management

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1describe the principles of environmental sustainability in relation to construction activities
2identify sources of pollution and waste and assess their potential to cause negative environmental impacts
3describe and implement simple strategies to monitor, mitigate and manage environmental impacts on a construction site.
